Job Purpose

As an Aerodynamics Engineering Intern you will assist with the development of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models (both full vehicle and component design) and analysis of fluid flow results, as well as the planning of physical wind tunnel and track testing. The emphasis will likely be on preparation of wind tunnel parts (CAD to rapid-prototype) and test planning, and then depending on experience or preference: developing correlation approaches between numerical and test results and/or using transient CFD data to help us optimize analysis workflows for physical test data. You will be working with industry-standard tools and an experienced team of engineers and professionals to evaluate aerodynamic performance in a fast-paced startup environment – fantastic preparation for an aerodynamics career in the automotive, motorsport, or aerospace industries!

Responsibilities and Goals

  • You will be mentored by a senior engineer, with regular opportunity to ask questions and seek guidance, but you will also be expected to bring strong self-motivation to go above and beyond. Specific goals and targets will be set and tracked once the candidate and their experience are known.
  • Assist in the development of CAD and physical models, participate in quality reviews, and liaise with model makers to ensure satisfactory products.
  • Contributing to the definition and identification of issues, collecting and analyzing data, and reporting back to engineers and other stakeholders within the company.
  • Keeping excellent documentation of work being undertaken

Qualifications/Experience

  • Current enrollment at an accredited college/university – Bachelor’s degree (B.S./B.A.) or Master’s (M.S., M.Eng) in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related programs.
  • Previous practical experience using CFD software is considered an asset (e.g. STAR-CCM+, ANSYS Fluent, OpenFoam) but not essential.
  • Previous experience using CATIA is considered an asset, but decent CAD experience in one or more of Solidworks, NX, Creo, Autodesk Fusion or similar will be valued.
  • Knowledge of aerodynamic/fluids basics, preferably supported by physical lab experiences from coursework or projects (e.g. a wind tunnel experiment, or similar testing like a turbojet or fluid flow rig).
  • Comfort with developing scripts and algorithms to analyze data would be useful but not essential.
  • Previous work in extracurricular teams such as Formula SAE, Solar Car, Ecomarathon, etc, is considered a strong asset – supply a link to a portfolio of work if you have one.
  • Maintaining a minimum of 3.2 GPA in a 4.0 grade scale
  • Basic knowledge with Microsoft Office/365 applications: Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, OneDrive, etc.
  • Strong analytical and practical problem solving skills – comfortable working in grey areas where there is no existing solution.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
