Battery Safety/Abuse Test Engineer

Reports To

This position will report to the Head of Powertrain.

Job Purpose

The person responsible for Battery Safety and Abuse Testing is responsible to understand and develop safety requirements for battery cells, modules and systems, and to devise and execute tests to validate that the company’s products satisfy the requirements.

Responsibilities and Goals

  • Develop system safety requirements in conjunction with other engineering contributors.
  • Perform safety analyses using first principles.
  • Develop safety test plans using techniques like Design of Experiments (DoE).
  • Execute tests and gather high-quality engineering data using internal and external resources
  • Manage testing activities including schedule, budget and x`


  • Bachelors, Master’s or Ph.D. in electrical or mechanical engineering.
  • Experience with battery safety standards (UN 38.3, SAE J2464, SAE J2929, etc.)
  • Experience working with lithium-ion battery cells in large-format, high voltage applications.
  • Understanding of heat transfer, fluid/mass transport, statistics and thermodynamics.
  • Familiarity with materials, processes and technologies for battery safety and thermal management.


  • Strong work ethic and a commitment to engineering excellence and data driven decision making.
  • Works well on projects on their own as well as with a team, able to clearly communicate ideas.
  • Hands-on interest in developing a real world product from concept to production stages.
